When you pay with a credit card the issuer, say Visa charges the motel a percentage of the charged amount as a fee to Visa---anywhere from 3 to 5 percent or so. Thus, the surcharge to you for not paying cash. When in a small town in the middle of the UP you should always pay in cash, thus avoiding any surcharge.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, the Econolodge Paw Paw, MI responded to the Michigan Attorney General that was doing an investigation (Refer to AG No.: 2018-0222173-A) into the "Deceptive Business Practice" that they used by not honoring my pre-paid...

Econo Lodge Sanitary Conditions Review from Detroit, Michigan
Review #837305 additional complaint--does not want to bring clean towels and take out the garbage....the management expects me to bring it to the front desk....paid for the service but, management doesn't want to comply....i've noticed that there are no resolutions to the 63 complaints already summited but, maybe this time will be the exception.....I employ you to rectify this and make me whole as this is an health issue related to the cleaniness of EconoLodge and all of the affiliates.....

It is always a good idea to try and find out just who owns/manages one of these budget motels and if you see any foreign names, go elsewhere.

Econo Lodge - Room Review from Battle Creek, Michigan
The quote given to me by phone including 2 dogs was not the case. In Battle Creek, Michigan on Capital street, I was told the cost did not include the dogs. The hotel is run down, dirty, in a poor neighborhood....all cement surrounding it, smells in the room, and is frequented by questionable individuals hanging around the premises. Lastly, if you can understand the clerk you will do better than I did. Avoid this motel.

Would have rather slept in my car on a highway! Don't stay at Econo Lodge Kalkaska.
Worst two nights of my life. Paid over $125/night which is a lot of money for a hotel in Northern Michigan to rest between jobs. This place is a complete dump! My room was literally falling apart. Every time I flushed the toilet water went on the floor. It smelled like smoke even though it was "non-smoking" hotel. The "continental breakfast" was like coffee and terrible package sweet rolls. Everything was filthy including the front office door. The shower pressure was zero. The beds were rocks. Nothing was updated in the last 20 years. Above all, I wrote a complaint to Econolodge and the "GM" for the lodge sent me the letter attached. I put it back in the envelope with a note and returned to sender. What a joke and insult.

Those people at the Econo Lodge were being as dishonest as a Carney! Everyone knows that those games are rigged so that hardly anyone ever wins!
